Marrakech

Marrakech is in central Morocco at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Arabic speakers know it as مُرّاكُش and Berber speakers know it as ⵎⵕⵕⴰⴽⵛ. People call it “it’s” the red city” or the “ochre city”. This is because of the red color of many of its buildings and houses.

Marrakech and its urban area counted around 1 million inhabitants in 2020. Number 2: By population, the city is the country’s third-largest urban area. It is equal to its historic rival, Fès. They’re behind Casablanca and Rabat.

The Imperial City and Meknès, Fès, and Rabat were the capitals of Morocco for about 350 years. This was under the Almoravid (11th–12th centuries). Then, the Almohad (12th–13th centuries) and Saadian dynasties (16th–17th centuries). It was also under Mohammed ben Abdallah. He was of the current Alaouite dynasty and reigned from 1757 to 1790.

Marrakech has a vast medina of 600 hectares. It is the most populous in North Africa and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Marrakech has become Morocco’s top tourist city. It has a 900-year-old medina, top hotels, and sunny weather. The country’s second-busiest airport serves the city. It is a busy traffic. It is Marrakech-Menara Airport. It attracted a massive crowd of three million visitors in 2019.
